Theatre studies

Created in 2018, the Centre d’Etudes Théâtrales (CET) is an interdisciplinary center attached to the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lausanne. It brings together people interested in teaching, research and cultural mediation in the field of theatre studies. For students, the creation of this Center has made it possible, from the start of the 2020 academic year, to complete a 120 ECTS credit Master ès Lettres with 60 ECTS credits in theatre studies. Postponed due to the current health crisis, the CET’s inaugural colloquium, entitled “The Body as Actor”, was originally scheduled for October 15-17, 2020, at the Grange de Dorigny.

Theater through the centuries

In line with the activities of the CET, we offer you a thematic selection reflecting the wealth of theatrical studies. In particular, you’ll find works on the theme of the body and acting, following the theme of the colloquium organized by CET. This selection will take you on a journey through time, from ancient pantomime to the bodies on stage in 20th-century Spanish theater, via the place of the human body in Shakespeare’s plays. While Les corps et les voix dans les danses du théâtre antique once again takes us back to ancient Greece, Gérard Diggelmann’s L’acteur, le jeu, le théâtre is a reminder of the importance, even today, of acting and the work of the actor in training to become an actor.

Theater around the world

This thematic selection is also an invitation to travel, enabling you to discover, for example, the theater of ancient India, Soviet theater after Stalin (1953-1964), or the new theater (1947-2017), born in France after the Second World War, in the wake of Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco. You can explore kabuki, the epic form of traditional Japanese theater, ancient Greek theater and theater in the Sanskrit language.

Interdisciplinarity and intermediality in theater studies

From the history of theater and stagecraft to linguistics, architecture, dramaturgy, performance and the philosophy of theater, theatre studies is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach and its interest in other media, such as comics, television and film. Intermediality is at the heart of our reflections on theater and cinema, through the comparative study of film and play scripts, for example.
