Ecologies de Gaïa

Faced with the imminence of a global ecological crisis, we urgently need to rethink the way we use the Earth. This year, the Groupe Vaudois de Philosophie has decided to go beyond a simple acknowledgement of the catastrophe underway and yet to come, and to reflect on different ways of inhabiting the Earth: “We don’t want to stop at a mere diagnosis of the catastrophe, nor do we want to line up recipes to try and cope with a possible future transition without too much damage. Rather, it’s a question of our ability to imagine other possible ways of inhabiting our soils, other ways of relating to all the creatures that inhabit them, other places and other territories. It’s a question of reconsidering our ways of inhabiting the Earth, and our ways of recounting what’s happening to us.”

To echo and extend this fruitful reflection, linked to our entry into the Anthropocene era, Unithèque’s collection managers have put together a selection of documents on different ways of living on Earth. While sustainability is the preferred response to the ecological crisis, are other paths being considered? What kind of society, policies and lifestyles are possible, on a local or global scale, to meet the challenges of this new era? A selection of documents to discover in the Renouvaud catalog and at the Unithèque from March 8 to 22, 2019.
