Japan

Photo Yann Becker

Armed with his camera, Swiss photographer Yann Becker has lived in and criss-crossed Japan for many years. As if keeping a diary, his images document a country that has become his own. His portraits, intimate and real, seem to bear witness to the care he takes to meet people. A great deal of trust has grown up between him and the people he portrays, and we can imagine that it took a long time to complete certain series. Yann Becker, who honored us with a visit to the BCUL at the beginning of September, proposes to tell us about a Japan far removed from clichés. A slanted Japan, like the beautiful face of the man shown here.

Other Japan-related delights will follow until the end of the year: two readings in the dark dedicated to writers Fumiko Hayashi and Aki Shimazaki, a workshop to try your hand at the art of haiku, and cinema to sweat and tremble. Sweat with the players of The First Slam Dunk in an explosive anime and tremble in the muggy atmosphere of Dark Water, a horror film where it’s not a good idea to cross paths with the ghost of a little girl.

And finally, because we love it, a weekend to eat and discover Japanese vegetarian cuisine. We look forward to seeing you!
