In the bourgeois household that employs her, Nanou prepares meals, serves at the table, sews, darns, answers “Oui Madame”, speeds around and doesn’t hesitate to kneel to clean up what others dirty. She offers her whole life to people who, under cover of fine words, think so little of her.
Alice Rivaz, who has her heart firmly in the right place, describes in this short story a situation that has lost none of its topicality.
