In the popular and editorial turmoil that followed this tragic event, the <a href=\"https:\/\/antiquipop.hypotheses.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antiquipop<\/a> website drew my attention to a distressing reality: the link between antiquity and racism, antiquity and fascism, the list goes on. <\/p>\n\n<p>I&#8217;d like to take you on a little tour of what I&#8217;ve gleaned on the subject, from far away to closer to home.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pharos\">Pharos<\/h2>\n\n<p>In the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College in New York State, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/pharos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pharos<\/a> website clearly announces the color: \u201c<em>Pharos is a platform where classical scholars, and the public more broadly, can learn about and respond to appropriations of Greco-Roman antiquity by hate groups online<\/em>.\u201d Articles are regularly published, such as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/pharos\/2020\/06\/26\/greco-roman-white-history-today-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Racist Commemoration of Greco-Roman History as White History<\/a><\/em>June 26, 2020 or <em><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/pharos\/2020\/05\/27\/anti-semitism-noticer-cicero-european-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anti-Semites Enlist Cicero Against Anti-Racism<\/a><\/em>May 27, 2020. <\/p>\n\n<p>Not seeking to change the minds of those who use antiquity to support their racist ideologies, the site&#8217;s contributors aim, in particular, to expose the errors, omissions and distortions that underlie the interpretations of these groups.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antiquipop\">Antiquipop<\/h2>\n\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/antiquipop.hypotheses.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antiquipop<\/a> website decodes references to antiquity in contemporary popular culture. In June 2020, Fabien Bi\u00e8vre-Perrin, PhD in History and Archaeology from the Universit\u00e9 Lumi\u00e8re Lyon 2, published a post entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/antiquipop.hypotheses.org\/8795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antiquit\u00e9, racisme et x\u00e9nophobie (Antiquity, racism and xenophobia<\/a> ), in which he gives a lengthy review of online resources on the subject, in French and English. <\/p>\n\n<p>Interested readers will find a bibliography of scientific articles and books, press articles, blog posts and, above all, numerous links to recent programs and podcasts.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mus-es\">Museums<\/h2>\n\n<p>On June 2, Lionel Pernet, Director of the Mus\u00e9e cantonal d&#8217;arch\u00e9ologie et d&#8217;histoire in Lausanne, published an article on LinkedIn entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/mus%C3%A9es-racisme-et-palais-de-rumine-lionel-pernet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Museums, racism and the Palais de Rumine<\/a>. The events surrounding the death of G. Floyd in Minneapolis prompted him to publish his paper on the decolonization of museums sooner than expected. <\/p>\n\n<p>He concludes his analysis with the announcement of a forthcoming exhibition at the Palais de Rumine in September 2020: <a href=\"http:\/\/theexotic.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exotic?<\/a> &#8221;  <em>More than 150 objects, paintings and books from all over Switzerland, dating from 1650 to 1815, will reflect the way in which Elsewhere was constructed in the Swiss collective imagination and how, in return, Switzerland was also \u201cexotic\u201d for the rest of Europe, with its Alpine cretins, its monsters and its wonders. A return trip that should encourage us to take a step aside and ask ourselves, again and again, whose savages we are, and what right we have to consider Others wilder than ourselves&#8230; The Museum alone will not cure us of xenophobia, but it can, along with other cultural venues, contribute to the fight against ordinary racism.  <\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bibliographie-sur-renouvaud\">Bibliography on Renouvaud<\/h2>\n\n<p>Here are a few resources that we can find closer to home, in our <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/collectionDiscovery?vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;collectionId=81406517370002852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">library<\/a>, commented on thanks to the back covers:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991013264639702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991017999019702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Black Athena: the Afro-Asian roots of classical civilization<\/em><\/a>by Martin Bernal, 1996-1999. In this work, the author proposes a radical reinterpretation of the roots of classical civilization, asserting that ancient Greek culture was derived from Egypt and Phoenicia. In his view, the studies of European scholars were biased by the endemic racism of <sup>19th-century<\/sup> Europeans, who could not accept the idea that Greek society had its origins in Africa and Southwest Asia.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991012151079702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991017102869702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Black Athena revisited<\/em><\/a>edited by Mary R. Lefkowitz, 1996. Was Western civilization founded by the ancient Egyptians and Phoenicians? Can the ancient Egyptians be called black? Did the ancient Greeks borrow their religion, science and philosophy from the Egyptians and Phoenicians? Have academics ignored the Afro-Asian roots of Western civilization because of racism and anti-Semitism? This book describes the Nazi regime&#8217;s use of Greek and Roman antiquity for propaganda purposes, through the constant use of classical antiquity in official speeches, films, state architecture, the press and state-sponsored festivities. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991012038939702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991003732819702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Athens seen through the eyes of its metagods: 5th-4th centuries BC<\/a><\/em>by Saber Mansouri, 2011. Unstable as a <em>migratory bird<\/em>\u201cin search of the beautiful season and the grain, immature like a\u201d<em>child<\/em>These were the images that Aristotle and Plato used to evoke the \u201cmet\u00e8que\u201d, the foreigner who lived and worked with the citizen in Athens in the 5th century.<sup>e<\/sup>  and IV<sup>e<\/sup>  And yet, in contrast to the classical discourse, Saber Mansouri presents an Athenian city in which the met\u00e8ques live, work, wage war and express their attachment to the city. The author thus deconstructs the figure of the imaginary or modernized met\u00e8que, a met\u00e8que who would be attracted solely by gain, versatile, always ready to betray, and consequently needing to be watched closely. This approach, which invalidates the discourse of modern ideologists who draw on history as the source of racial, legal and cultural discrimination between citizens and foreigners, restores metecics, good or bad, to their rightful place in society.  <em>polis<\/em>  and their time. They too are Athens. They were never confronted with our contemporary concepts of tolerance, racism or xenophobia. They played a full part in the political and social equilibrium of Athenian democracy.
