Following the random declination of this post dedicated to <em>RUINES<\/em>, let&#8217;s begin our odyssey with a few literary memories&#8230; <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-du-c-t-de-la-litt-rature\">Literature<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-joachim-du-bellay\">Joachim Du Bellay<\/h3>\n\n<p>Joachim Du Bellay (1522-1560) brought back a collection of sonnets from his Italian trip between 1553 and 1557, <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991013392179702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991009862939702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Antiquities of Rome<\/em><\/a>Meditations on the ruins, admiration for Latin grandeur and melancholy over the annihilation of ancient Rome punctuate the work.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cNewcomer who seeks Rome in Rome<br\/>And nothing of Rome in Rome apper\u00e7ois,<br\/>These old palaces, these old arches which you see,<br\/>And these old walls, it is what Rome one names.<br\/>See what pride, what ruin, and like<br\/>That which mist the world under its laws<br\/>To give all, gave itself sometimes,<br\/>And became proye with time which all consumes.\u201d<\/p><cite><em>The Antiquities of Rome<\/em>, 1558, extract<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chateaubriand\">Chateaubriand<\/h3>\n\n<p>Fran\u00e7ois-Ren\u00e9 de Chateaubriand (1768-1848) made his first trip to Italy between May 1803 and January 1804. The peninsula had already been a prestigious destination since the <sup>17th<\/sup> century, and his stay there, a veritable romantic and cultural quest for the pleasure of the picturesque, inspired him to write <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991012326899702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991017243229702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Journey to Italy<\/em><\/a>. The author&#8217;s vision of beauty is marked by the sign of decline: it evokes a time that is disappearing, dissolving&#8230; into ruins.  <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;A fragment suddenly detached from the vault of the Library rolled at my feet, as I passed: a little dust rose, a few plants were torn and dragged along in its fall. The plants will be reborn tomorrow; the noise and dust dissipated instantly: here is this new debris lying for centuries next to those who seemed to be waiting for it. This is how empires plunge into eternity, where they lie silent.<\/p><cite><em>Journey to Italy<\/em>, 1827, excerpt<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stendhal\">Stendhal<\/h3>\n\n<p>Henri Beyle (1783-1842), known by his pseudonym Stendhal, was also a great lover of Italy. He even wrote a book entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991007587319702852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991013391319702851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Histoire de la peinture en Italie<\/em><\/a>. He traveled extensively throughout the country. He was particularly moved by his visit to the Colosseum in Rome, which inspired him to write: &#8220;Initiation to beauty and the quest for the pleasure of seeing and feeling:   <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cRome, August 17th. &#8211; How many happy mornings I have spent at the Coliseum, lost in some corner of these immense ruins [&#8230;] The peaceful chirping of birds, echoing faintly in this vast edifice, and from time to time, the profound silence that follows, undoubtedly help the imagination to fly away into ancient times. One arrives at the most vivid pleasures that memory can provide!\u201d<\/p><cite><em>Walks in Rome<\/em>, 1829, excerpt<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-du-c-t-des-expositions\">Exhibitions<\/h2>\n\n<p>In 2020, two photographic exhibitions evoke <em>RUINES<\/em>: the physical ones that dot the Mediterranean rim.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-koudelka\">Koudelka<\/h3>\n\n<p>In Paris, at the Biblioth\u00e8que nationale de France (BnF), an exhibition entitled  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnf.fr\/fr\/agenda\/josef-koudelka-ruines#bnf--conf-rences-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Josef Koudelka. Ruins <\/em><\/a>. Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Algeria are among the 19 countries to be discovered through the lens of the Czech photographer. His work reveals \u201c<em>the chaotic beauty of ruins, the remains of monuments transformed by time, nature, the hand of man and the disasters of history<\/em>\u201d. In parallel, BnF offers us a blog post and a <a href=\"https:\/\/gallica.bnf.fr\/blog\/05102020\/sur-les-traces-de-koudelka-en-mediterranee?mode=desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Gallicarte<\/em><\/a> inviting us on a virtual journey.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boissonnas\">Boissonnas<\/h3>\n\n<p>In Geneva, the Mus\u00e9e Rath is hosting an exhibition entitled  <a href=\"http:\/\/institutions.ville-geneve.ch\/fr\/mah\/expositions-evenements\/expositions\/fred-boissonnas-et-la-mediterranee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Fred Boissonnas and the Mediterranean. A photographic odyssey <\/em><\/a>from September 25, 2020 to January 31, 2021. \u201c<em>In search of light, of Magna Graecia and independent Egypt, of Homeric places and biblical landscapes<\/em>\u201d, the Geneva-based photographer also invites us on a beautiful journey. Indeed, landscape photography made Fred Boissonnas (1858-1946) famous. Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/institutions.ville-geneve.ch\/fr\/bge\/bge-numerique\/personnalites\/boissonnas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geneva Digital Library<\/a> to discover all the facets of his work.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-du-c-t-des-universit-s\">Universities<\/h2>\n\n<p>While universities can also examine the poetics of <em>RUINES<\/em> in literature, for example, there are fields where <em>RUINES<\/em> are an object of study in their own right: archaeology and geography.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-paris-sorbonne\">Paris Sorbonne<\/h3>\n\n<p>In Paris, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openedition.org\/31983?utm_source=lettre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research seminar<\/a> devoted to the links between <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210122090005\/https:\/\/archeophoto.hypotheses.org\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">archaeology and photography<\/a> is attempting to define a new disciplinary field in contemporary archaeology: photographic archives. Various sites are studied or presented, such as the sanctuary of Apollo at D\u00e9los (Greece) through digital and 3D reconstructions, and the site of Ebolie (Campania, Italy). As for Susa (Iraq), illustrations of excavation methods and the daily life of archaeological missions are also presented. Finally, major French sites such as Alise Sainte Reine (Al\u00e9sia) and Arcy-sur-Cure (Palaeolithic cave) complete this picture of current research.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-universit-de-gen-ve\">University of Geneva<\/h3>\n\n<p>At the University of Geneva, a project funded by the Swiss National Science<a href=\"http:\/\/www.snf.ch\/fr\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foundation (SNSF<\/a>) is also examining photography in the field of antiquity:  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unige.ch\/sciences-societe\/geo\/recherche\/projets\/projetulysse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ulysses. Reimagining the Mediterranean: from myth to photography <\/a>. Focusing in particular on Fred Boissonnas and Victor B\u00e9rard&#8217;s 1912 voyage in the footsteps of Ulysses, this project has a public component, the Mus\u00e9e Rath exhibition also presented in this post. But more than a \u201ctext-landscape\u201d confrontation, this research also raises questions about the notion of geographical imagination, the possible relationship between geography and fiction, and the history of geography and its methods. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-du-c-t-de-la-biblioth-que-cantonale-universitaire-lausanne\">From the Lausanne Cantonal University Library<\/h2>\n\n<p>If I had to choose just three titles from all the <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/collectionDiscovery?vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;collectionId=81412869010002852\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selected works<\/a> on the subject of <em>RUINS<\/em> (and antiquity &#8211; my collection), I&#8217;d mention the exhibition catalogs by <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991021377986602852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991023704414102851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Koudelka<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991021392199102852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991023717039602851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boissonnas<\/a>, mentioned above, and<a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991021392595002852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991023716628302851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alain Schnapp<\/a>&#8216;s A History of Ruins, all three published this year.<\/p>\n\n<p>The BCULausanne&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcu-lausanne.ch\/en\/collections-patrimoine\/reserve-precieuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R\u00e9serve pr\u00e9cieuse<\/a> contains a number of treasures, and many of the works in our selection are kept there for you to consult on site! Here you&#8217;ll find publications by Fred Boissonnas, including <em>En Gr\u00e8ce par monts et par vaux<\/em> (1910) and <em>L&#8217;Epire, berceau des Grecs<\/em> (1920). <\/p>\n\n<p>William Gell&#8217;s <em>Vues des ruines de Pompe\u00ef<\/em> (1827) is another precious work, but it can also be consulted <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ch\/books?vid=BCULVD2406049&amp;hl=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online<\/a>, thanks to the digitization project in which BCULausanne is participating. For the record, William Gell&#8217;s unpublished drawings of Pompeii have recently been identified and published in a <a href=\"https:\/\/renouvaud1.primo.exlibrisgroup.com\/discovery\/fulldisplay?docid=alma991021346580602852&amp;context=L&amp;vid=41BCULAUSA_LIB:VU2&amp;lang=fr&amp;search_scope=MyInst_and_CI&amp;adaptor=Local%20Search%20Engine&amp;tab=Everything&amp;query=any,contains,991023674707402851&amp;offset=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book<\/a> that you will also find on our shelves.
